The Green Man by grinagog The Green Man by grinagog
Some of my Woodcarving re-visted after 2 years....

This woodcarving was my first 3d woodcarving, worked onto a live tree!

It portrays a style frequently seen in churches and cathedrals around Europe, but a image that has been seen from other cultures around the world!
There are many different interpretations about the Green man(or woman, sometimes!) The most popular is that he/she represents a lost and diminishing doctrine about the understanding of the nature of Earth and all its bounty. That is why the majority of the images come from the period when Christanity was taking over a long standing Pagan style religion in Europe.
The images are often found hideing in receses and atop high ceilings in Christian buildings. Most of the buildings that they are found in, replaced even earlier Pagan temples of worship!
It isnt really understood why most of the images have vegetation vomiting out of orifices, noses, mouths eyes and ears. But some say it is representing the natural being that is within us all!
:D

So beautiful! I bet the Green Man smiles when he visits this. :)
I would love to do a similar thing but I am very content to say the council haven't wrecked any trees near me. Maybe a dead wood carving would do ^^

i sculpted some 'green men' like this myself (in clay) i cast them in some plaster and hung them in the garden. the plaster was meant to withstand outdoor weather but it clearly didnt have rainy old england in mind hey! lol
theyre looking pretty good though, growing moss on them now and hopefully when spring arrives the garden will take them over!

very good work btw lol

I remember commenting on this when you first added it to your gallery! I'm sorry to see that it has a crack down the middle, but it's as beautiful as ever!

Brilliant. I don't think that I've seen carving into live wood before. I love the energy that the tool-marks give this, along with the random natural dynamic of the shakes.

XLNT carving & very inspiring subject.
Like the idea of coming across this while walking thru forest. I have such surprises I've left for future adventurers in my forests too, but not on live trees! :D

The tree had had its branch lopped of by the council and the owner wanted me to carve the end of the stump! Except for the initial cut(by someone else) My work shouldnt affect the life of the tree at all!
